Quick answer: An everyday skin care routine can begin with three jobs: cleanse gently, moisturize, and protect against the sun. Expensive products and a long sequence of steps are not requirements.
Give each product a job
Before shopping, look at what you already own. Can you explain what each product is for? A bottle bought because it was popular may not have a useful place in your routine. The aim here is ordinary care, not a promise of flawless skin.
Keep cleansing gentle
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and fingertips rather than scrubbing tools. Pat dry with a soft towel. Generally, limit face washing to twice daily and after heavy sweating; more washing is not automatically better.
Moisturize and protect
Apply moisturizer to damp skin. For exposed skin outdoors, choose broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, following its directions and reapplying at least every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Shade and protective clothing belong in the plan too.
Your first step
On paper, make three spaces labelled cleanse, moisturize, and sun protection. Add the products you currently use beneath them. This is a shopping filter, not a test: an empty space is a question to investigate, not a reason to buy a whole collection.
When a basic routine is not enough
Persistent skin problems deserve individual advice. A dermatologist can help with your skin type and concerns; this starting routine does not replace a treatment plan.
